GOALS AND TARGETS, 2008–2015
The goal of the Network is to cooperate, collaborate and promote
the conducts of liver fluke research both epidemiology and basic
science aspects that relevant to the diagnosis, pathogenesis,
prevention and control of liver flukes. The targets for the plan
period 2008–2015 are to:
-
establish the Asian Liver Fluke Network in affiliation with
health/research organizations.
-
promote
conducts of research relevant to diagnosis, pathogenesis, chemotherapy,
prevention and control of liver fluke among Asian members.
-
map and
reduce burden and morbidity of liver fluke infection in high
endemic regions.
STRATEGIC AREAS FOR ACTION
The Network has a strategic plan with a set of subactivities,
each of which proposes a series of actions to meet specific
targets during 2008–2015, as follows:
1.
Establishment of the Network and organize meetings regularly
among key members during the early phase
2. Promoting basic studies on biology of liver flukes and
their intermediate hosts in relation to diagnosis,
pathogenesis, prevention and control of the infection
3. Assessment of current burden of liver fluke infection and
its associated morbidities by using modern epidemiology
tools, i.e. GIS/RS, DALYs
4. Integrated approach and multiintervention packages for
disease control in endemic foci in the Greater Mekong
Sub-Region
5. Strengthening database systems and capacity building in
member countries
6. Promoting an intersectoral, interprogrammatic approach to
liver fluke control
